Grub @ The BPL Shaping Memory into Story: Memoir Writing Workshop

Class Description

We all have fascinating, surprising, amusing, and sometimes difficult moments in our lives, many of which could appeal to readers. But what does it take to render those events on the page in a way that is both engaging and illuminating, so that a reader gets not just the facts, but a depth of feeling and meaning? How do we shape our complicated memories into a story? And with so many life events to choose from, where does a writer even begin?

In this 6-week course, we’ll dive into the craft of memoir to tackle these questions. We’ll cover everything from writing detail-rich scenes, to figuring out central themes, to the ethics of writing about real people. Each week, we’ll read short passages from published memoirs and take a close look at how they work. Then we’ll do guided exercises to help you reconnect with your memories and generate pieces that could become the seeds of a book, with the option of sharing what you create. Depending on the desires and needs of the group, there may be opportunities to submit longer excerpts for discussion in a supportive, constructive environment. This course is open to writers at any level who are eager to tell their true stories and explore the joys of the genre.
