Class Description

Do you have a hard time answering the question, “What kind of writer are you?" Do traditional genre-based conventions constrain your wildest and most brilliant ideas? Are you tired of having to figure out whether your writing is fiction or nonfiction?

Your stories should never be pigeon-holed into any single style. During this six-week class of genre-bending, -blending, and -embodying, we will smash the boundaries of genre and mosaic the shards into something bold. We’ll play with integrating poetics into prose, and we'll walk the line between genres. We’ll read genre-breaking examples by writers like Lily Hoang, John Keene, Carmen Maria Machado, Alexis Pauline Gumbs, and Alan Pelaez Lopez. Then, through guided writing sprints, writers will develop their own strange and spectacular stories.

Writers will NOT be expected to write, read, or do any preparation outside of sessions. Writers will be asked to prioritize their creativity, authenticity, vulnerability, and play in their writing (as opposed to prioritizing productivity and “publishable”/”good” writing).

Find your edge, collaborate with your fellow rebellious writers of color, and redefine the rules of the game.

Zoom Participation:

In our experience, the intimate nature of a writing workshop benefits from on-camera participation. Students are of course welcome to turn their camera off whenever they need to, but it is a community norm for cameras to be on most of the time. You can learn more about using Zoom here.

Zoom Accessibility:

You can enable closed captioning at any time during the meeting by clicking the CC button at the bottom of the screen. If you'd like to access the transcript after class, please make sure to let your instructor ahead of time that you'd like a copy.
