Class Description

Are you ready to take a serious step with your short fiction writing? Maybe you’ve taken a few workshops, received detailed feedback, and made hearty attempts at revision. Maybe you’re thinking of applying to a fellowship or an MFA, or you’ve graduated from one but haven’t found success with your submissions. Whatever the case, this 5-month course is designed to bring your short stories closer to publishable level, help you build community with a diverse group of committed writers, and give you a definitive toolkit to establish a consistent submission practice.

You will meet every other week from April thru August, leaving the course ready for the fall submission period, the most active among literary journals and magazines. During your time in this class, you can expect the following:

  • Rigorously workshop two complete and previously revised stories
  • Discuss advanced revisions strategies you can apply on your own
  • Source and build a submission list in collaboration with your peers
  • Learn some essential submission strategies for the fall period
  • Participate in a Q&A with a literary journal editor toward the end of the course

Note: this NOT a generative class. The central focus is advanced revision and submissions. Students should have workshopped and revised their two stories prior to joining.

Zoom Participation:

In our experience, the intimate nature of a writing workshop benefits from on-camera participation. Students are of course welcome to turn their camera off whenever they need to, but it is a community norm for cameras to be on most of the time. You can learn more about using Zoom here.

Zoom Accessibility:

You can enable closed captioning at any time during the meeting by clicking the CC button at the bottom of the screen. If you'd like to access the transcript after class, please make sure to let your instructor ahead of time that you'd like a copy.
