Class Description

You've taken 10 Weeks, 10 Stories (or 6 Weeks, 6 Stories) at Grub Street and have a treasure trove of tales. Now you're ready to revise and polish your pieces for publication. In this advanced course, we will focus on revising short fiction. As with our best-selling 10 Weeks/6 Weeks courses, we will be focusing on discovering new angles in our storytelling and bringing out the best in our drafts. Each class will include a short lecture on a specific and advanced craft element. We will also complete in-class diagnostic exercises on already written work and then take those drafts home to revise. Students will have three opportunities to submit these revisions for workshop over the course of the class. You’ll leave this class invigorated, with up to six story revisions, three workshopped stories, and a game plan for revising and completing your drafts in progress. Students should bring 13 copies of a short piece of fiction to the first class (no more than 1,000 words), and a revision goal they have for the story (for example: a stronger ending, a more dynamic scene or dialogue, etc.).

Zoom Participation:

In our experience, the intimate nature of a writing workshop benefits from on-camera participation. Students are of course welcome to turn their camera off whenever they need to, but it is a community norm for cameras to be on most of the time. You can learn more about using Zoom here.

Zoom Accessibility:

You can enable closed captioning at any time during the meeting by clicking the CC button at the bottom of the screen. If you'd like to access the transcript after class, please make sure to let your instructor ahead of time that you'd like a copy.
