Class Description

Want to experiment with new forms of poetry, but aren’t sure where to begin? Or do you find yourself with too many ideas to commit to one? Whatever the case, if you’re ready to produce new work, this class is for you! In this course, you will have one goal: to write six new poems.

Over six weeks, we’ll explore six different poetry forms or themes, reading published examples from authors like Natalie Diaz, Bianca Stone, Mary Ruefle, Jericho Brown, Layli Long Soldier, Kaveh Akbar, Sharon Olds, and many more, and studying the craft behind them. We’ll put the tools we learn into practice through a series of exercises and writing prompts meant to inspire your work. At the end of each week, you’ll have the opportunity to submit a new poem for impressions and feedback from your fellow writers, to help you identify and develop the “heat” of your poems.

You will leave the course with fresh drafts of six poems and the insight, inspiration, and knowledge of craft to continue developing them.

*Please note that while our handy dandy "Schedule" tab states a 6-7pm class time, there are actually no live meetings for this class! Assignments and deadlines will be given by your instructor. Students will have access to the online class portal starting at 5pm on the first day of class. Instructions for logging onto the online portal will be emailed to registered students before 5pm the first day of class.
