Class Description
In this introductory course, we'll explore the art of picture book writing. We will learn the essentials, such as storyboarding for the 32-page format, as well as elements of language and rhythm, character and emotion, tension and plot. Picture book writing is challenging, and this class aims to provide writers with tools, tips, and skills to write in this format. We’ll take a close look at recently published fiction and nonfiction picture books and examine page turns and the interplay of text and pictures. At several points during each class, we’ll pause to write in response to a set of picture book prompts, then share possibilities within our writing.

Zoom Participation:
In our experience, the intimate nature of a writing workshop benefits from on-camera participation. Students are of course welcome to turn their camera off whenever they need to, but it is a community norm for cameras to be on most of the time. You can learn more about using Zoom here.
Zoom Accessibility:
You can enable closed captioning at any time during the meeting by clicking the CC button at the bottom of the screen. If you'd like to access the transcript after class, please make sure to let your instructor ahead of time that you'd like a copy.
