Class Description
Sometimes the smallest moment (or the shortest essay) holds the greatest revelation. But when it comes to writing our own lives, it can be difficult to know where to begin. This course is for writers who are ready to produce new work but need the inspiration and accountability to get started. In this course, you will have one goal: to write two essays in the space of four weeks. During the first half of class, you will write two essay drafts, and during the second half, you will have the opportunity to revise one or both of them. In our four weeks together, we’ll explore two opposing-yet-complementary themes: upheaval, and dailiness. We’ll consider routines and their disruption, and you’ll be invited to essay into either moments and ideas from before the pandemic, or from during these strange times. We’ll read and study the craft of essays from writers like Danez Smith, Carmen Maria Machado, CJ Hauser (upheaval), and Ross Gay, Molly Young, and the various writers of Essay Daily’s “What Happened That Day” series (dailiness). We’ll put the tools we learn into practice through a weekly writing prompt to inspire your draft and/or revision. You’ll also have the opportunity to share two drafts and one revision for feedback from the instructor and your fellow writers. You will come out of the course with at least two new essays, and at least one polished revision, as well as the insight and inspiration to continue writing and revising.
*NOTE that while our handy dandy "Schedule" tab states a 6-7pm class time, there are actually no live meetings for this class! Weekly lessons and assignments open each Wednesday. Students will receive an invitation to Wet Ink, our online class platform, before 5pm on the first day of class.
