Class Description

Want to take a weekly workshop, but can’t commit to every week? This class meets every other week, to give students breathing room and ample time to write new work. In this workshop, we’ll look at exemplary short essays and then, every other week, students will be assigned a specific assignment, under 1000 words, to complete and bring for in-class workshopping. Forms and topics of the essays may include: personal/reflective narrative; relationship/family essay; travel/journey narrative; lyric/collage essay; "hermit crab" essay (an essay that borrows the form of another genre); cultural appreciation essay; and others. Students will get real-time feedback each week in brief workshop sessions (sometimes in small groups). You’ll generate loads of new material, explore challenges in style and voice, and take a fresh look at your life experience. By working in a shorter format, you’ll also find ways to tighten your prose and improve your storytelling skills.

Please note: This class will not meet in March. The last day of the course will be Tuesday, June 12th.
