Class Description
Here is your safe space to embrace your multiplicity, your nuance, and your story. We’ll explore notable Black writers over the generations, like Alice Walker, Kiese Laymon, and Michael Arceneaux, before delving into an inspiring writing warm up focused on how to express detail. Then we’ll dig into our main assignment: writing a personal essay inspired by unique moments in your life. The instructor will facilitate time for sharing essays as well as workshopping ideas and completed works.
This generative seminar is open to Black writers of all levels, but especially for those seeking a supportive entry into the personal essay.

Zoom Participation:
In our experience, the intimate nature of a writing workshop benefits from on-camera participation. Students are of course welcome to turn their camera off whenever they need to, but it is a community norm for cameras to be on most of the time. You can learn more about using Zoom here.
Zoom Accessibility:
You can enable closed captioning at any time during the meeting by clicking the CC button at the bottom of the screen. If you'd like to access the transcript after class, please make sure to let your instructor ahead of time that you'd like a copy.
