Class Description

What is the meaning behind your name? What does your name say about who you are or where you come from? Many people hold a sense of pride in their name, while others face shame, oppression and discrimination. Students will enter dialogue about the ways our names, given or chosen, speak to our unique and complex identities. We will consider the meanings, implications, and assumptions behind our names. Finally, through discussion and writing, we will look into the ways that names and the act of naming can be a source of empowerment. Writers will leave class with a deeper understanding of self and positionality based on the ways we use language to identify. There will be multiple opportunities to write, share, and receive feedback on written work. Each attendee will come out with at least one written and edited piece surrounding this theme. For writers of all experience levels, age 13 - 18 ONLY. We always end with a cross-class open mic where all sessions' students are invited to share and listen to each other's work!
