Writing Self-Portraits like Kahlo

No Longer Enrolling

Class Description

One of Mexico’s most well-known and loved artists, Frida Kahlo, painted brutally honest self-portraits that reveal her psychological and emotional responses to trauma and adversity. Her self-reflection fueled an unflinching and enduring interest in her identity, and her divided roles as artist, lover, and wife. What can writers learn from Kahlo’s relentless interrogation of herself? How can this level of self-analysis feed and develop the stories of our lives?

In this class, we’ll discuss these questions and engage in deeply reflective writing prompts and activities to help you develop yourself as a character on the page. We'll also look to Kahlo's paintings as examples of deep self-interrogation, and read excerpts of model essays by Jesmyn Ward, Ada Limón, and Roxane Gay.

Zoom Accessibility:

You can enable closed captioning at any time during the meeting by clicking the CC button at the bottom of the screen. If you'd like to access the transcript after class, please make sure to let your instructor ahead of time that you'd like a copy.
