Writing For The Ear: Audio Storytelling For Writers

No Longer Enrolling

  • $75.00 Non-Member
  • $65.00 Member

Class Description

Podcasts are in no short supply, and that means writers have a new way to practice their craft, tell their stories and reach new audiences -- in every genre. But creating a produced piece of audio requires skill in writing "for the ear": crafting your words with the understanding that someone will be listening, not reading, and taking advantage of sound devices to advance your story. This is different from live storytelling as well, in which listeners can also take visual cues from the performer.

In this day-long session, we will listen and discuss the made-for-audio writing of Karina Longworth (You Must Remember This), Nina Porzucki (The World in Words), Maria Murriel (yours truly) and others -- noting differences in technique and literary devices. We'll dissect works in several genres. At the end of the day you'll have practiced writing for the ear and will have the tools to adapt your stories for the podcasting world.
