Class Description
This class is free and you do not need to pay or apply for a scholarship. Instead, to join this class fill out This Form. DO NOT use any of the other buttons or links to apply to this class.
In this class, we will read authors who reveal the decolonial possibilities of science fiction and speculative writing. We’ll ask ourselves what strategies we can bring to our craft in order to decolonize the imaginary worlds we create. Participants write exercises designed for this purpose. Writers will have the opportunity to share their work and get feedback, time permitting. We will discuss the work of authors like Neil Gaiman, Marlon James, Samuel Delany, Octavia Butler. All writers of all levels of experience are welcome!
About GrubStreet Remote Classes
GrubStreet will be hosting all of our classes remotely from now through the end of the summer. We’ve decided as a staff that the best thing we can do for our community is to follow the advice of public health experts, and participate in the social distancing that’s recommended to help slow the spread of disease. You will be able to participate in class via Zoom videoconference from wherever you’re most comfortable. All you’ll need is a laptop or a phone! You’ll receive an email from your instructor on the day your class is scheduled with a link to join the class meeting via Zoom–no need to download anything or sign up for Zoom in advance! Thanks to the excellent literary citizenship of our donors, scholarships are available for all GrubStreet classes. To apply, click the gray "APPLY FOR SCHOLARSHIP" button. In order to be considered for a scholarship, you must complete your application at least one week before the start date of a class. Please await our scholarship committee's decision before registering for the class. We cannot hold spots in classes, so the sooner you apply, the better. Scholarships cannot be applied retroactively.

Zoom Participation:
Students are not required to turn their camera on, but are encouraged to participate any way they feel comfortable through functions such as the live chat, emoji reactions, and unmuting the microphone. Learn more about using Zoom here.
Zoom Accessibility:
We ask that instructors enable closed captioning and send a transcript of the session after class. You can also enable closed captioning at any time during the meeting. If your instructor forgets to send the transcript, just send ’em an email!
