Class Description

Author Kristen Lamb wrote, “The key to creating better plots rests in a deeper understanding of character.” Lamb shares the belief with many writers that well-defined, layered, interesting characters beget equally well-defined, layered, and interesting plots. But where do we begin in our journey toward building such characters? How do we bridge the gap between these characters and plot? In this class we’ll focus on the use of literary and mythic “types” as foundations (but not blueprints) for our characters and their stories. We’ll analyze three famous “types” and their evolution and appearance through time and across cultures. If time allows we’ll begin to plot a story as a class using one of the discussed “types.”

Families welcome. Coffee and snacks provided. Teens are welcome to attend with an older relative. We will provide simple activities to keep young children occupied.
