Class Description

What’s the first word you think of when you hear “teenager?” It begins with a D... Yes, DRAMA. Teenage drama, while tortuous to navigate as a teen or the parent of a teen, is rife with the stuff of good fiction. Teenagers are interesting. And dramatic. Which is, in part, why we’re seeing such a boom in the production of fiction for and about them.

In this workshop we will:
• quickly discuss the definition of young adult fiction, breaking down some of the key elements of the genre;
• get to know a little bit about YA readers, who can be far more sophisticated than you might think;
• discuss the YA story structure in terms of creating emotional highs and lows for characters you want to root for.

Come with your YA story idea. Ultimately, you will create your own emotional rollercoaster for your characters by creating plot points that will drive the emotional highs and lows of your story. This should set you on your path to writing your outline and entire book.
