The Art of Freewriting with a Purpose

Class Description

If you’ve ever wanted to write without editing, censoring, or judging, this is your chance. Freewriting is a highly effective technique to get words on a page for the first time or to work out thorny problems in an ongoing project. No worries about publication or perfection—just the willingness to take a risk. Freewriting not only fuels creative energy but is also a powerful way to inform craft, whether you write (or want to write) fiction or nonfiction. In a fun, critique-free atmosphere, we’ll discuss the principles of freewriting, drawing from the work of Natalie Goldberg, Steve Almond, Brenda Ueland, and Peter Elbow as well as from the instructor's Write It Like It Is workshops. Participants will do several freewrites in response to prompts. Sharing is optional but encouraged. Whether you’re a beginner or a pro, you'll learn practical tools for continuing the process at home.

Scholarships Format/Location

Thanks to the excellent literary citizenship of our donors, scholarships are available for all GrubStreet classes. To apply, click the gray "APPLY FOR SCHOLARSHIP" button. In order to be considered for a scholarship, you must complete your application at least one week before the start date of a class. Please await our scholarship committee's decision before registering for the class. We cannot hold spots in classes, so the sooner you apply, the better. Scholarships cannot be applied retroactively.
