Class Description
The horror genre has become the defining genre of our time. Great horror is a dark reflection of the world we live in and can tap into the primal fears and desires of the audience. Whether your story is within the horror genre or not, it may have moments that tap into the fears of the reader and understanding the principles that make the genre work can lend power to your work.
In this three-hour workshop, writers will learn why audiences love to be afraid and what is the underlying meaning of our love of horror. We will study the structure and classical components of the horror story by analyzing great works of literature and film from masters of the genre: Poe, Shelley, Stephen King, Jordan Peele, Ari Aster, Anne Rice, Grady Hendrix, Stephen Graham Jones, George Romero & Clive Barker.
This workshop will be useful for short story writers, novelists and screenplay writers working in the horror genre or a genre which use horror as an emotional element. Students will be given short writing prompts to help refine their ideas and ask questions designed to strengthen their work.

Zoom Participation:
In our experience, the intimate nature of a writing workshop benefits from on-camera participation. Students are of course welcome to turn their camera off whenever they need to, but it is a community norm for cameras to be on most of the time. You can learn more about using Zoom here.
Zoom Accessibility:
You can enable closed captioning at any time during the meeting by clicking the CC button at the bottom of the screen. If you'd like to access the transcript after class, please make sure to let your instructor ahead of time that you'd like a copy.
