Class Description

Have you started a story you're passionate about but run out of steam? Are you stuck on this amazing idea and just unsure where to start? Or maybe you made it to the other side of a draft on the wings of dreams and coffee and now you're thinking: what is this thing I've written? Hop into this next installment of the Speculative Series to explore different methods of outlining your fantastic story. (Pun intended!)

While Joseph Campbell's Hero's Journey is the classic archetype of SFF structures, it's not the only way to go. From its counterpart the Heroine's Journey, to 8-point plotting, to the snowball method, there are countless structures available to put you and your characters on solid ground. In this practical class we'll take a look at techniques for outlining at the bird's eye view and zooming in to the granular. We'll discuss mapping your plot through character growth by joining internal and external journeys, weaving in subplots that add complexity and depth to your world, and supporting your structure with theme. We'll also discuss how to avoid the traps that get speculative writers stuck in endless worldbuilding rather than moving forward with your story.

Class Format

This class will take place using Zoom videoconferencing. About 15 minutes before your class is scheduled to begin, you'll receive an email from your instructor with a link to join the class meeting!
