Class Description
How do our life experiences—sacred, mundane, and profane—shape our identity, live within our bodies, and give rise to our poetry?
We will read poets writing poetry about identity related to race, gender, sexual orientation, war, trauma, addiction, and discuss and explore how this can be deeply healing both for writer and reader. Students will have at least 3 writing prompts to work with, and will workshop at least one piece in progress. Students will leave with the beginnings of 3 poem drafts, and with the encouragement of feeling seen and supported while expressing their experience through their own unique voice. Students will also leave inspired to continue writing by way of having experienced poetry to be a self-care skill allowing them to inhabit themselves and their lives in renewed ways–both on and off the page.
This class will be hosted using live Zoom meetings! You will be able to participate in class via Zoom videoconference from wherever you’re most comfortable. All you’ll need is a laptop or a phone! About 15 minutes before your class is scheduled to begin, you'll receive an email from your instructor with a link to join the class meeting via Zoom–no need to download anything or sign up for Zoom in advance! Scholarship Information
Thanks to the excellent literary citizenship of our donors, scholarships are available for all GrubStreet classes. To apply, click the gray "APPLY FOR SCHOLARSHIP" button. In order to be considered for a scholarship, you must complete your application at least one week before the start date of a class. Please await our scholarship committee's decision before registering for the class. We cannot hold spots in classes, so the sooner you apply, the better. Scholarships cannot be applied retroactively.

Zoom Participation:
In our experience, the intimate nature of a writing workshop benefits from on-camera participation. Students are of course welcome to turn their camera off whenever they need to, but it is a community norm for cameras to be on most of the time. You can learn more about using Zoom here.

You can enable closed captioning at any time during the meeting by clicking the CC button at the bottom of the screen. If you'd like to access the transcript after class, please make sure to let your instructor ahead of time that you'd like a copy.
