Class Description

So you have writer’s block? Great work—that means you’re a writer! Many of us get down on ourselves when we can’t get those words to come out. But, as Samuel Beckett famously wrote, "Ever tried. Ever failed. No matter. Try Again. Fail again. Fail better."

Writer’s block and the messy, confusing generation stage are nothing other than normal steps in the writing process, and there are all kinds of methods we can use approach them. In this workshop, participants will explore both the psychological and practical aspects behind what it takes to get words written. We'll break into several in-class writing sessions, using multiple ways to break through--from classic methods like freewriting, to innovate prompts which engage the senses, emotions, and the subconscious. Finally, we will brainstorm ways to take what we've learned into our lives outside of the classroom.

This workshop is for writers of all genres and levels. Beginner writers may use this time to jump into an exploration of creative writing. More advanced students may come with one or more unfinished pieces or ideas that they'd like to get unstuck on. However, an empty notebook will be a perfectly good place to start!

Class Format

This class will take place using Zoom videoconferencing. About 15 minutes before your class is scheduled to begin, you'll receive an email from your instructor with a link to join the class meeting!

Zoom Participation:

In our experience, the intimate nature of a writing workshop benefits from on-camera participation. Students are of course welcome to turn their camera off whenever they need to, but it is a community norm for cameras to be on most of the time. You can learn more about using Zoom here.

Zoom Accessibility:

You can enable closed captioning at any time during the meeting by clicking the CC button at the bottom of the screen. If you'd like to access the transcript after class, please make sure to let your instructor ahead of time that you'd like a copy.
