Class Description
Tired of expressing your opinions via your Facebook status? Get your op-ed out of your head, off of social media, and into the headlines! In this seminar, you'll learn the basics of writing and submitting the standard 800-word op-ed column/commentary. Via lecture, short exercises, and discussion of examples from published op-eds, you’ll learn: how to hone your topic into a focused, timely, topical and marketable idea responsive to current events, news and culture that editors want; leverage your personal experience and expertise; master the basic op-ed structure, including crafting ledes and kickers, writing a strong body, and adding support and research; and understand how and where to submit your op-eds to newspapers, magazines, and online publications. In-class exercises will help you get a start on a draft. For any writers looking for practical tips to write and get their op-eds into the marketplace.
