Class Description
This seminar is for writers in the process of completing a novel. The ending of a novel can be a stumbling block for even the most accomplished authors. Often, readers will find an ending unsatisfying, jarring, or (worst of all) unmemorable. Some novels fizzle out; others take inexplicable turns; all too many end in deaths that occur more for the convenience of the author than as a logical or coherent outcome of the plot. The best endings leave readers surprised, satisfied, and moved, all at the same time—not an easy feat for writers to accomplish!
In this seminar, we'll examine different narrative arcs that can be employed in writing novels, from the formulaic progress of a murder mystery to the leisurely “plateau” arc of Victorian novels. We'll discuss what kind of ending each arc requires, and read examples of final pages from a variety of published authors. We'll conclude with an in-class exercise and discussion focusing on the participants' own projects. By the end of the seminar, each writer will have a better sense of what makes a memorable ending in general and what kind of ending might work well for their novel in particular.
Consider taking this seminar alone or alongside the other seminars in this series: Novel Essentials: Narrative Style (March 23), Novel Essentials: Narrative Perspective (April 13), Novel Essentials: Narrative Pacing (May 25).
