Memoir Essentials: Balancing Scene, Summary, and Musing

No Longer Enrolling

Class Description

If you’ve been following along with our discussions of memoir thus far, you’re probably well-persuaded of the need for a strong narrator. But you also know that you need your memoir to be vivid and engrossing, with plenty of scenes for the reader to sink into—and that there are stretches of your life that will need to simply be summarized, as they are not thematically important enough for scenes but are necessary so as not to confuse the reader. How do you achieve the right balance between these three types of writing? How can you recognize which events should be delivered which way? Please bring a printout of at least 20 pages of draft to class, to give yourself options as to what to work with. These pages need not be polished. Come prepared to read and write!

Scholarships Format/Location

Thanks to the excellent literary citizenship of our donors, scholarships are available for all GrubStreet classes. To apply, click the gray "APPLY FOR SCHOLARSHIP" button. In order to be considered for a scholarship, you must complete your application at least one week before the start date of a class. Please await our scholarship committee's decision before registering for the class. We cannot hold spots in classes, so the sooner you apply, the better. Scholarships cannot be applied retroactively.
