Class Description

One of the great things about fiction is that we can write about anything. One of the overwhelming (and occasionally paralyzing) drawbacks of fiction ... is that we can write about anything. If the choices are truly infinite, where do we even start?

But what if, in the words of writer Gilbert K. Chesteron, art consists of limitation? After all, writers are always under restrictions of some kind, from word count and the amount of time we have to write, to genre and our attempts to appeal to an audience. Isn't it time we freed ourselves from choice overload and made limitations work in our favor?

In this three-hour class, you will be given a series of tightly controlled writing prompts that will force your creativity to bloom in new ways. Whether you're new to writing and looking for a place to start, or an old pro looking to mix things up, this class will provide the challenges, and you will turn them into creative opportunities. We will also spend part of the class reading the resulting pages aloud so that we can learn from each other's experiences.

No preparation is necessary for this class. Just bring your laptop or paper and pen(cil) and get ready to write!

In our experience, the intimate nature of a writing workshop benefits from on-camera participation. Students are of course welcome to turn their camera off whenever they need to, but it is a community norm for cameras to be on most of the time. You can learn more about using Zoom here.

Zoom Accessibility:

You can enable closed captioning at any time during the meeting by clicking the CC button at the bottom of the screen. If you'd like to access the transcript after class, please make sure to let your instructor ahead of time that you'd like a copy.
