Class Description
Do you often write from a young narrator’s point of view? Do you find yourself thinking about your childhood experiences? Are you drawn to coming of age stories? Maybe you should be writing novels for kids. In this workshop, you will be introduced to the rules that govern writing for middle grade and young adult audiences. We’ll do brainstorming exercises to explore your voice, read and discuss published middle grade and YA texts, and workshop student manuscripts. We’ll also discuss the importance of thinking like a kid, not as an adult looking back at childhood, as well as address important fiction writing components such as plot, setting, and character development. If you are looking for a supportive, engaging, and inspiring community, this is the workshop for you.
Thanks to the excellent literary citizenship of our donors, scholarships are available for all GrubStreet classes. To apply, click the gray "APPLY FOR SCHOLARSHIP" button. In order to be considered for a scholarship, you must complete your application at least one week before the start date of a class. Please await our scholarship committee's decision before registering for the class. We cannot hold spots in classes, so the sooner you apply, the better. Scholarships cannot be applied retroactively.

Zoom Participation:
In our experience, the intimate nature of a writing workshop benefits from on-camera participation. Students are of course welcome to turn their camera off whenever they need to, but it is a community norm for cameras to be on most of the time. You can learn more about using Zoom here.
