How to Write a Memoir

Class Description

Is your life story begging to be told? Have you lived through something so layered and complex that you need to write a book about it? Have you struggled to find your life experience represented in memoirs? Do you feel ready to share your story in hopes of finding an audience that can relate?

How to Write a Memoir is the perfect place to begin your memoir writing journey with GrubStreet. In three hours, you’re going to learn everything you need to know about the fundamentals of memoir writing, including memoir structure, writing about yourself and loved ones as characters, and finding your memoir’s narrative arc. We’ll cover what it takes, realistically, to bring your book from an exciting idea to a completed manuscript (and yes, in our opinion, this includes workshopping your memoir with other writers!). As a part of this class, you’ll have a chance to begin the first stages of mapping out your memoir, connect with other aspiring memoirists, and learn more about upcoming opportunities to move your memoir project forward in a GrubStreet workshop.

Writing Roadmap: We've created a simple, goal-based writing roadmap to help you find the perfect GrubStreet course for your writing needs.

Zoom Participation:

In our experience, the intimate nature of a writing workshop benefits from on-camera participation. Students are of course welcome to turn their camera off whenever they need to, but it is a community norm for cameras to be on most of the time. You can learn more about using Zoom here.

Zoom Accessibility:

You can enable closed captioning at any time during the meeting by clicking the CC button at the bottom of the screen. If you'd like to access the transcript after class, please make sure to let your instructor ahead of time that you'd like a copy.
