How to Publish a Poem

Class Description

You’ve come to the end of the complex, exhilarating process of writing a poem. Congratulations! But what comes next—sharing it with the world—can feel like its own mysterious art. Where do poems go? What makes a journal or editor say yes? And how do you navigate submission etiquette without losing your love for the work itself?

The publishing world can be overwhelming, especially in poetry, where there are so many outlets and no single roadmap to follow. How to Publish a Poem is here to help your poem find its place in the world. This is a welcoming, no-pressure seminar designed to demystify the process and empower you to take your next step toward publication. You bring your questions and a poem or two you’re proud of; we’ll provide guidance, tools, and a community of fellow poets navigating the same terrain.

In three hours, we’ll explore what literary journals are looking for, how to format and submit your poems, and how to keep track of submissions (and rejections!) without losing momentum. We’ll discuss cover letters, bios, contest culture, and how to build a sustainable relationship with publishing. You’ll leave with a curated list of journals that might be a good fit for your work—and the confidence to start submitting.

Writing Roadmap: We've created a simple, goal-based writing roadmap to help you find the perfect GrubStreet course for your writing needs.
