GRUB INSTRUCTORS ONLY: Transgender Inclusion in the Writing Workshop

Class Description

With transgender visibility on the rise, transgender stories are appearing in fiction at a significant rate, demanding workshops to grow their awareness of how to best critique such stories and ensure transgender students feel included in the classroom at large. By providing a helpful environment for transgender writers and their stories, instructors can play an important role in bolstering transgender visibility in the written arts.

In this session, we'll go over common terms and concepts of transgender culture, how to prep your syllabus and classroom for trans inclusion, how to handle issues specific to the trans workshop, and become familiar with issues that may arise from (and how to handle workshopping of) transgender stories written by cisgender students. Time permitting, there will also be opportunity to ask any curiosity questions you may have about transgender culture and its people. Don't be shy! This session is designed to encourage cis instructors to do their best and help them better connect with themselves and the transgender world around them.

NOTE: This seminar is ONLY for Grub instructors.

Zoom Participation:

In our experience, the intimate nature of a writing workshop benefits from on-camera participation. Students are of course welcome to turn their camera off whenever they need to, but it is a community norm for cameras to be on most of the time. You can learn more about using Zoom here.

Zoom Accessibility:

You can enable closed captioning at any time during the meeting by clicking the CC button at the bottom of the screen. If you'd like to access the transcript after class, please make sure to let your instructor ahead of time that you'd like a copy.
