Novel Generator (Fall 2014)

No Longer Enrolling

  • Tuition: See Course Description

Class Description

A nine-month program designed to help students at all levels complete a first draft of a novel in an environment that offers support, accountability and feedback appropriate to this early stage in the novel-writing process. The course is divided into three phases, each with its own structure and goals.

Phase I, which lasts for six weeks, focuses on craft, through a combination of lectures, exercises, and discussion of a common text.

Phase II, in which the class meets for fourteen weeks of workshopping using the Novel in Progress method—scenes read aloud in class for on-the-spot feedback. At the end of Phase II, students will submit three key scenes to the instructor, and will each have a one-on-one meeting with the instructor to discuss those scenes and the student’s vision for the novel as a whole. Students will also be paired during this time with a class “buddy” for weekly accountability during Phase III.

Phase III includes three class meetings and a one-hour meeting with the instructor, with students writing independently as they finish their novel drafts. Each student will have a 20-minute exit meeting with the instructor during the last week of the course, to solidify the next steps.

Through a combination of craft instruction, accountability, instructor feedback, and class continuity, the Novel Generator will help students finish their first drafts by the last class—or, in the case of long novels, make huge strides toward the ending.

You can read more about the program here, and apply by filling out this online form by August 1st, 2014 at 12:00pm.

Zoom Participation:

In our experience, the intimate nature of a writing workshop benefits from on-camera participation. Students are of course welcome to turn their camera off whenever they need to, but it is a community norm for cameras to be on most of the time. You can learn more about using Zoom here.

Zoom Accessibility:

You can enable closed captioning at any time during the meeting by clicking the CC button at the bottom of the screen. If you'd like to access the transcript after class, please make sure to let your instructor ahead of time that you'd like a copy.
