About Alexis M.
I am a California writer based in Massachusetts. My lyric essay “Which One is the Lifeline?” appears in The Common and was named a Notable Essay in Best American Essays 2023. My essay “The Disney Look” is included in the anthology Mamas, Martyrs, and Jezebels: Myths, Legends, and Other Lies You’ve Been Told About Black Women, published by Black Lawrence Press. An excerpt from my memoir-in-progress, “Membership”, was a finalist for the 2023 CRAFT Memoir Excerpt & Essay Contest, guest judged by Sarah Fawn Montgomery, and my essay “Reduce, Recycle, Reuse” is forthcoming in The Maine Review. I am an alumna of the Anaphora Writing Residency and the Juniper Institute. I was also a 2023 Tin House Scholar, the recipient of a Contributor’s Award in Nonfiction from the Bread Loaf Writers’ Conference, and I am a 2024 Tin House Reading Fellow.
