About Derek JG

Derek is an American writer and scholar. His debut collections of poems, Reading Water, was selected by Eduardo Corral as the winner of the 2023 Lightscatter Press Prize. He’s also the author of the nonfiction chapbook Poetry Is a Disease (Greying Ghost, 2022). Derek holds a doctorate in English and Creative Writing from Ohio University, and an MFA from the University of Massachusetts, Boston. His poems and prose are published in Pleiades, The Writer’s Chronicle, Banshee, Salamander, Best New Poets, Prairie Schooner, and elsewhere. With over ten years of experience teaching creative writing and literature, he offers individualized writing consultations and coaching on a one-to-one basis; sessions are tailored to meet the specific goals and needs of writers. He works with writers of all skill levels and experience.
