Writing About Religion

Class Description

Faith—finding it, losing it, fighting wars over it, or avoiding it altogether—provides rich fodder for writers. Through thoughtful, layered essays, writers can combat stereotypes about religions and about those who adhere to no faith. They can explain how we approach loss and how religion intersects with other facets of society. But what does it take to craft successful, non-preachy essays and op-eds about religion? Over the course of six weeks, you’ll analyze essays on religion and write essays and op-eds of your own. The instructor will incorporate some teaching of reporting skills as well. Each week, you’ll have assigned readings and writing work to do outside of class, in addition to in-class exercises. The goal is to finish the class with two polished, publishable works of writing related to religion—a short essay or op-ed, and a longer-form piece that may be a personal essay or include some outside reporting.

Note: Class will not be held the week of January 15th

Zoom Participation:

In our experience, the intimate nature of a writing workshop benefits from on-camera participation. Students are of course welcome to turn their camera off whenever they need to, but it is a community norm for cameras to be on most of the time. You can learn more about using Zoom here.

Zoom Accessibility:

You can enable closed captioning at any time during the meeting by clicking the CC button at the bottom of the screen. If you'd like to access the transcript after class, please make sure to let your instructor ahead of time that you'd like a copy.
