Class Description

This class is free and you do not need to pay or apply for a scholarship. Instead, to join this class fill out this form. DO NOT apply for a scholarship through the Grubstreet website.

Tired of coming up with the same kinds of stories and characters? All writers go through this, but here’s a way to shake up your writing world. In this popular workshop, you will write brief new work every week and/or add new material for longer stories. Each week, you'll work with a different exercise, and you’ll have the opportunity to get feedback on your work from the instructor and other students. Classes will also include craft discussion and close reading of published contemporary stories by authors such as Carmen Maria Machado, Sabrina Vourvoulias, Lidia Yuknavitch, Luisa Valenzuela, Julio Cortázar, and Juan Rulfo.

The goal is to leave the class with new beginnings and one or two short-short stories. Recommended for students with some experience writing fiction. The class is designed to allow you to participate to your level of comfort and circumstances, but you will get more out of the class if you can spend 2-4 hours a week writing outside of class.

Families welcome. Coffee and snacks provided. Teens are welcome to attend with an older relative. We will provide simple activities to keep young children occupied.

Who Should Register?

Write Down the Street has a special focus on making the creative writing workshop more accessible to those who face challenges due to cost, language skills, lack of access to transportation, and other barriers. We believe that all voices must be spotlighted with the range and fullness they deserve.

These programs are offered tuition-free thanks to the support of generous donors who are committed to our mission of ensuring all voices are heard.

Scholarships Format/Location

Thanks to the excellent literary citizenship of our donors, scholarships are available for all GrubStreet classes. To apply, click the gray "APPLY FOR SCHOLARSHIP" button.
