WDtS East Boston: Magical Realism Workshop

Class Description

This class is free and you do not need to pay or apply for a scholarship. Instead, to join this class fill out this form. DO NOT apply for a scholarship through the Grubstreet website.

In this course, we'll explore the relationship between the real and unreal by workshopping a short story or a novel chapter. Each week you'll read our classmates' work and receive feedback on your own, with a particular focus on symbolism, character arcs, and real-world connections. We'll discuss craft points related to your work and you'll get a chance to ask specific questions related to what you're working through in your draft. Each student should get the chance to workshop at least twice, so you may bring in a new draft of the same piece or an entirely new piece altogether for your second workshop. This class is a natural extension of 'Magical Realism to Process Real Life' but new students are more than welcome. Ideally you will come to class with 2-5 pages ready to workshop -- they do not need to be final drafts in any form, but you should have some idea of what you'd like to work on in the future of the piece and what feedback you need at this stage.

Families welcome. Coffee and snacks provided. Teens are welcome to attend with an older relative. We will provide simple activities to keep young children occupied.
