Class Description
New to the world of poetry? If not, perhaps you want to get back to the basics to gather some inspiration. Either way, this class is for anyone interested in doing a deep dive into the fundamentals of poetry! Over six weeks, you will learn poetic tools and techniques to start putting into practice in your own writing. Each week, we will focus on various aspects of craft––including imagery, rhythm, voice, and more––and explore them through published poets like Joy Harjo, Danez Smith, Ntozake Shange, Jericho Brown, and Ada Limon. We’ll put the tools we learn to work through weekly exercises and writing prompts, and participants will have the opportunity to receive feedback from the instructor and fellow writers. Participants will leave this class with a deeper understanding of poetry, a sense of their strengths and instincts as a poet, and concrete ways to continue building on them!

Zoom Participation:
In our experience, the intimate nature of a writing workshop benefits from on-camera participation. Students are of course welcome to turn their camera off whenever they need to, but it is a community norm for cameras to be on most of the time. You can learn more about using Zoom here.
Zoom Accessibility:
You can enable closed captioning at any time during the meeting by clicking the CC button at the bottom of the screen. If you'd like to access the transcript after class, please make sure to let your instructor ahead of time that you'd like a copy.
