Class Description
With millions around the planet demanding environmental justice, it's necessary for writers to think about how their work engages with the natural world. Thanks to the generosity of our donors, we are thrilled to be able to offer this 10-week workshop free of charge to writers who wish to address this urgent global issue in their art. We will use generative exercises and group discussion to discover new ways of interacting with nature in our work. Studying a wide range of authors such as Robin McLean, Ursula K. Le Guin and more, we will challenge traditional notions of setting and place while adding layers of social commentary to our work.
Each class will begin with a workshop. Students may submit up to 10 pages of work for their fellow readers and writers to discuss. Workshops will cover everything from structure to character and worldbuilding. After workshopping, we will discuss a story students are to have read before the meeting, using the text as a way of exploring particular elements of creative writing before ending class with writing time where participants can implement all that we’ve learned and discussed. Writers of all levels and genres are encouraged to join; this 10-week course was designed so that both emerging and established voices can gain new insights on how to write about the environment!
Please note: This class requires weekly attendance, and a commitment to workshopping your classmates' writing each week. Seats are limited so that each writer can receive in-depth feedback on their work; please check the schedule and make sure you are able to fully participate in this workshop before claiming a seat.
Writing Roadmap: We've created a simple, goal-based writing roadmap to help you find the perfect GrubStreet course for your writing needs.

Zoom Participation:
In our experience, the intimate nature of a writing workshop benefits from on-camera participation. Students are of course welcome to turn their camera off whenever they need to, but it is a community norm for cameras to be on most of the time. You can learn more about using Zoom here.
Zoom Accessibility:
You can enable closed captioning at any time during the meeting by clicking the CC button at the bottom of the screen. If you'd like to access the transcript after class, please make sure to let your instructor ahead of time that you'd like a copy.
