Class Description

For self-identified writers of color of various identities, this class will explore identity, borders, multilinguality, migration, race and origins (real, imagined, and everything in between). We will explore what it means to belong or feel outsiderhood in the United States; we will write to first challenge and respond to dominant narratives and create narratives that reflect ourselves, self-define ourselves in all our complexities. The readings and videos will be across genres, but will be heavily poetry-based, including works by Danez Smith, Lee Herrick, Meena Alexander, Franny Choi, Li Young-Lee, Heid Erdrich, Craig Santos Perez, Luis Rodriguez, Martin Espada, Haunani Kay-Trask, Barbara Jane Reyes, bell hooks, and more. Writers will engage in exercises, discussion-responses on Wet.Ink and watch lecture-videos, along with submitting 1-2 pieces that they can get feedback on (two new pieces or 1 piece and 1 revision).
Also please feel free to check out this article that Aimee wrote about teaching this course here!
