Class Description
When writing fiction, the structure of a story is critical element to consider. In this 6-week course, we'll study and experiment with different types of narrative structure, from common linear and nonlinear ways to construct stories, to flash fiction, epistolary, and other experimental methods. Each week, we will read and study stories which exemplify these modes, including such writers as Kathleen Collins, Theresa Naval, Lydia Davis, Jamaica Kincaid, Caitlin Horrocks, and others. We’ll apply what we learn by experimenting with these structures in our own writing, and giving each other informal feedback on our drafts. By the end of the course you will have six story drafts, or beginnings of drafts, and the insight and inspiration to continue developing them.
This course is a chance to do a deep-dive into generating new work, plus exploring exciting, fun craft elements in a supportive environment. It is appropriate for all fiction writing levels, though familiarity with basic elements of fiction such as character, setting, point of view, etc. will be helpful. Students should be prepared to do approximately 2-5 hours of work per week.
*Please note that while our handy dandy "Schedule" tab states a 6-7pm class time, there are actually no live meetings for this class! Assignments and deadlines will be given by your instructor. Students will have access to the online class portal starting at 5pm on the first day of class. Instructions for logging onto the online portal will be emailed to registered students before 5pm the first day of class.
Scholarship Information

In order to be considered for a scholarship, you must complete your application at least one week before the start date of a class. Please await our scholarship committee's decision before registering for the class. We cannot hold spots in classes, so the sooner you apply, the better. Scholarships cannot be applied retroactively.
