Class Description
Tired of workshopping the same stories? Can't come up with new plots or characters? All writers go through this, but here’s a way to shake up your writing world. In this often-sold-out workshop, you will write brand-new complete stories, ranging from 300 to 1,000 words, and/or brand-new material for longer stories. Each week, you'll work with a different exercise to explore a focused approach to plot, form, character, theme, setting, and language, and you will get quick, on-the-spot feedback on what you've written from both the instructor and fellow students. Classes will also include craft discussion and close reading of published contemporary stories. We'll discuss works by writers such as Daniel Alarcón, Julia Alvarez, Donald Bartheleme, Lucia Berlin, Bonnie Jo Campbell, Jhumpa Lahiri, Steven Millhauser, Viet Thanh Nguyen, Francine Prose, and David Foster Wallace.
The goal is to leave the class with new beginnings, a few complete short-shorts, and at least one revised piece to submit for publication. Recommended for students who’ve taken Fiction I or an equivalent.

In order to be considered for a scholarship, you must complete your application at least one week before the start date of a class. Please await our scholarship committee's decision before registering for the class. We cannot hold spots in classes, so the sooner you apply, the better. Scholarships cannot be applied retroactively.

We ask that instructors enable closed captioning and send a transcript of the session after class. You can also enable closed captioning at any time during the meeting. If your instructor forgets to send the transcript, just send ’em an email!
