Class Description

For this class, you will have already completed three picture book manuscript drafts. During the six weeks of class, you will craft six bold revisions (two revisions per story), fiction or nonfiction, with an eye on submitting to children's book agents and editors. Each week will include a short lecture, generative prompts and exercises, and particular strategies for picture book revision. Also, each week all students will prepare comments and questions for the writers of works designated to be discussed. Writers will receive peer comments on craft and content prior to the workshop, then during workshops those writers will carry those discussions of their work forward toward next steps and further revisions of the work. This class is for experienced picture book writers who know the format, have completed multiple picture book manuscripts and are eager to dive into revision with a supportive peer community. Although this is primarily a revision generative class, each student may also receive one written critique from the instructor for a picture book text manuscript. Submission details to be shared in class. Mentor texts will include many recently published picture books including works by Minh Lê, Margarita Engle, Kate Messner, Bao Phi, Katie Yamasaki, Joyce Sidman, Jane Yolen, Uma Krishnaswami, Carole Boston Weatherford, Matt de la Peña, Andrea Pinkney, Joanne Schwartz and Derrick Barnes, among many others.

Please note: Class does meet April 7th (during The Muse and The Markplace conference) or April 21st (for Easter Sunday).

Zoom Participation:

In our experience, the intimate nature of a writing workshop benefits from on-camera participation. Students are of course welcome to turn their camera off whenever they need to, but it is a community norm for cameras to be on most of the time. You can learn more about using Zoom here.

Zoom Accessibility:

You can enable closed captioning at any time during the meeting by clicking the CC button at the bottom of the screen. If you'd like to access the transcript after class, please make sure to let your instructor ahead of time that you'd like a copy.
