Class Description
Whether you're looking to expand your knowledge of craft, experiment with new forms, or just produce a bunch of new work, this class offers the opportunity to broaden your poetry horizons and get writing. We’ll move energetically and purposefully through six different poetry prompts, each tackling either occasion, technique, or form (examples: Ode/Elegy, Pantoum, anaphora). We'll read a few successful, stunning examples of published authors' approaches to these prompts, and explore unexpected ways to get close to their level, producing a new draft of a poem every week. To kick off each week’s topic, the instructor will provide a packet of readings and a short lecture, as well as a prompt for the week. We will discuss also each other's work, and offer questions and feedback to help guide the writer on their way. You will leave the course with fresh drafts of six poems and the insight, inspiration, and knowledge of craft to begin tackling revision.
This class is classified as a generator, which means the focus of the class is on generating new work. Students will discuss each other's work in cohorts facilitated by the instructor, but the emphasis is not on formal critique. Students will have the opportunity to submit one revised piece to the instructor at the end of class to receive a critique and recommendations on next steps.
Please note that while our handy dandy "Schedule" tab states a 6-7pm class time, there are actually no live meetings for this class! Assignments and deadlines will be given by your instructor. Students will have access to the online class portal starting at 5pm on the first day of class. Instructions for logging onto the online portal will be emailed to registered students before 5pm the first day of class.
