Class Description
Want to revisit that crush from high school? Want to write about the anguish of unrequited love? The frisson of a first kiss? The person you dated to get back at your parents? Pet love, sibling love, love and danger, even slippery self-love that sometimes eludes us? In this generative workshop, all kinds of love stories are on the table. Whether you choose to write fiction or memoir pieces, in this workshop you’ll write 6 short-short stories, or scenes, and/or the beginnings of longer stories to be read out loud to the class for on-the-spot feedback. The goal is to leave our time together inspired to go further into the emotional well, to feel less daunted by a blank page and use love—messy, exciting, painful and revealing, as a way in. We’ll use stories by George Saunders, Jhumpa Lahiri, Anton Chekhov, Stuart Dybek, Louise Erdrich, Jamaica Kincaid, Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, and others, as launching points into pieces of our own.

Zoom Participation:
In our experience, the intimate nature of a writing workshop benefits from on-camera participation. Students are of course welcome to turn their camera off whenever they need to, but it is a community norm for cameras to be on most of the time. You can learn more about using Zoom here.
Zoom Accessibility:
You can enable closed captioning at any time during the meeting by clicking the CC button at the bottom of the screen. If you'd like to access the transcript after class, please make sure to let your instructor ahead of time that you'd like a copy.
