Class Description

Create

Over the course of six weeks, writers in this intensive class will generate six short essay drafts of between 500 and 1,000 words each. Each week, we will look at model essays in various essay forms, including from writers like Audre Lorde, Anne Carson, James Baldwin, Claudia Rankine, Berry Grass, and Amy Tan. Students will respond to prompts and exercises, both at home and in class, to practice with different styles and genres of creative nonfiction, including personal and nonpersonal essay forms. Each student will be given the chance to workshop at least two essays, or beginnings of essays, of their choosing with the whole class, plus participate in small groups for various types of sharing and reflection.

At the end of the class, students will leave with several drafts or starts of drafts, as well as advice on how to move forward into one's writing life beyond the class.

Writing Roadmap: We've created a simple, goal-based writing roadmap to help you find the perfect GrubStreet course for your writing needs.

Zoom Participation:

In our experience, the intimate nature of a writing workshop benefits from on-camera participation. Students are of course welcome to turn their camera off whenever they need to, but it is a community norm for cameras to be on most of the time. You can learn more about using Zoom here.

Zoom Accessibility:

You can enable closed captioning at any time during the meeting by clicking the CC button at the bottom of the screen. If you'd like to access the transcript after class, please make sure to let your instructor ahead of time that you'd like a copy.
