Class Description
In this one-day intensive seminar, we’ll examine some prime examples of memoir and essay structures and forms. These include narrative and non-narrative; chronological and non-chronological; and scene- and reflection-based structures. We’ll look at classical narrative arcs, and other forms might include: collage, and borrowed or “hermit carb” forms; braided, woven and layered structures; functional structures; discursive or “clothesline” structures; and circular, meditative or lyric forms, from such authors as Scott Russell Sanders, Eula Biss, Brenda Miller and Brian Doyle. In exercises, we’ll map out ideas for possible forms and structures. Feel free to bring drafts or outlines of short or longform works to which you can apply the class lessons immediately.

Zoom Participation:
In our experience, the intimate nature of a writing workshop benefits from on-camera participation. Students are of course welcome to turn their camera off whenever they need to, but it is a community norm for cameras to be on most of the time. You can learn more about using Zoom here.
Zoom Accessibility:
You can enable closed captioning at any time during the meeting by clicking the CC button at the bottom of the screen. If you'd like to access the transcript after class, please make sure to let your instructor ahead of time that you'd like a copy.
