About David

What I Offer: As a Grub Street manuscript consultant since 2019, I have worked with dozens of emerging and established writers to help get their books, stories, and essays ready for publication. I read widely across genres, but I'm especially interested in Young Adult, mystery, literary fiction, and non-fiction. As a 20-year veteran of the U.S. Army, I also offer invaluable expertise in books related to military matters. More About Me: David Abrams is the author of Brave Deeds and Fobbit. Publishers Weekly called Fobbit “an instant classic” and named it a Top 10 Pick for Literary Fiction in Fall 2012. It was also a New York Times Notable Book of 2012, an Indie Next pick, a Barnes & Noble Discover Great New Writers selection, a Montana Honor Book, and a finalist for the L.A. Times’ Art Seidenbaum Award for First Fiction. Abrams’ short stories have been nominated for the Pushcart Prize and appeared in the anthologies Watchlist, Fire and Forget and Montana Noir. Other stories and essays have appeared in Esquire, Glimmer Train Stories, Narrative, Salon, F(r)iction, High Desert Journal, Salamander, Connecticut Review, The Greensboro Review, Consequence, and many other publications. Abrams earned a BA in English from the University of Oregon and an MFA in Creative Writing from the University of Alaska-Fairbanks. He lives in Helena, Montana with his wife and their three cats.

David's Works

  • Fobbit

"A harrowing satire of the Iraq War and an instant classic. . . . Abrams's prose is spot-on and often deadpan funny . . . This novel nails the comedy and the pathos, the boredom and the dread, crafting the Iraq War's answer to Catch-22."--Publishers Weekly (starred review)

  • Brave Deeds

"In one very full, very messed up and hair-raising day, Brave Deeds delivers everything we could ever ask for in a novel, no less than birth, death, and all points in between. David Abrams has written a flat-out brilliant book of the Iraq War, one that reads like a compact version of the Odyssey or Going After Cacciato. Soldiers on a journey--it's one of humankind's oldest stories, and Abrams has given us the latest dispatch from the field, to stunning effect." --Ben Fountain, author of Billy Lynn's Long Halftime Walk "At the beginning of Brave Deeds I was laughing out loud, and enjoying the feeling of being among the Army squad, even one making an insane walk through Baghdad. But by the end of the book I was silent: I was really undone by it. David Abrams has done something very powerful, drawing together the different layers of this story so beautifully, and drawing us down below the surface to a place of darkness and sadness. It's a tour de force. Bravo." --Roxana Robinson, author of Sparta
