Alternatives to Change: Navigating Story Climax for Marginalized Characters

Apply for Scholarship
  • $85.00 Non-Member
  • $75.00 Member

Class Description

Theories of story structure emphasize the climactic moment as the moment of change: a character taking action. But what happens when we deal with protagonists who are passive, introverted, traditionally silenced, or otherwise marginalized? How to visualize the climax then? In this 3-hour seminar we will dissect short stories by Nicole Krauss, Jamel Brinkley, as well as a craft essay by Megan Staffel, share comments, and engage in a freewriting session. Participants will leave with deeper understanding of story structure and ideas for their own work.

Scholarships Format/Location

Thanks to the excellent literary citizenship of our donors, scholarships are available for all GrubStreet classes. To apply, click the gray "APPLY FOR SCHOLARSHIP" button. In order to be considered for a scholarship, you must complete your application at least one week before the start date of a class. Please await our scholarship committee's decision before registering for the class. We cannot hold spots in classes, so the sooner you apply, the better. Scholarships cannot be applied retroactively.
