Energize Your Short Fiction

Class Description

Would you like a new way to examine your short stories, and new tools to help bring them to life? In this intensive six-week course, we will apply some real-life forms of energy (potential, gravitational, elastic, kinetic, electrical, magnetic, nuclear and thermal) to identify which aspects of our fiction are fizzing, and which might need a boost. We will look closely at work by authors like Weike Wang, Ted Chiang, Kevin Barry and Lesley Nneka Arimah, to determine how their vibrancy is generated. You will perform exercises engineered to add potential, or tension, or movement, to your own pages, as we chart paths toward the sublime for your stories. And you will have the opportunity to develop or revise a short story with the benefit of feedback from your classmates and instructor. By the end of this course, you’ll come away with a new vocabulary to evaluate and improve your fiction, and practical strategies for how to charge your writing with that vital spark.

No science degree needed for this craft metaphor.
