The Calderwood Writers' Stage: Bringing Stories to Life
The Calderwood Writers' Stage is Boston's premier literary destination for writers, readers, and art enthusiasts alike. Located in the Seaport District on the ground floor of the Center for Creative Writing, the Writers' Stage gives established and emerging writers of all genres, styles, and lived experiences a unique platform to share their work and connect with a diverse community of readers.
Our programming includes author readings with our partners at Porter Square Books: Boston Edition that go behind the scenes to show how books are made, craft talks elevating issues of identity and culture, book and film clubs designed for writers, and other innovative literary events spotlighting the most pressing contemporary issues of the day.
Whether you're a new or seasoned writer looking for community, a book lover searching for your next favorite read, or somewhere in between, Calderwood Writers' Stage provides a space to come together over beer or wine and a shared love of writing and storytelling. Take a look at our signature events below, and get ready to join a dynamic community of writers at the heart of Boston's literary scene.
Signature Stage Programs
Author Readings
With our partners Porter Square Books: Boston Edition, the Writers' Stage hosts author events that bring together writers from a wide range of backgrounds and genres, giving you a chance to discover new voices, engage with your favorite authors, learn about important cultural issues, and get insights into the writing process. Once a month, join us for our Grubbie Debut Author Series, a celebratory reading and conversation series that goes behind the scenes with members of the GrubStreet community to launch their debut books.
Writers’ Weekends
Twice a year, GrubStreet hosts Writers’ Weekends to celebrate and highlight the work of diverse communities within the writing world. Each Writers’ Weekend will feature special events — readings, craft sessions, keynotes, parties, and more — to explore how writing intersects with identity, culture, and society. Our inaugural Latinx Writers’ Weekend is just around the corner this June, and we're thrilled to have a weekend of programming that amplifies and celebrates the voices of Latinx writers.
GrubStreet's Book Club
Take your love of reading to the next level and read like a writer in GrubStreet's monthly Book Club, a series curated and led by GrubStreet instructors featuring thought-provoking deep dives into fiction and nonfiction books through the lens of craft. Whether you're a writer looking for inspiration or simply a lover of literature, our Book Club will deepen your understanding of stories in a community of engaged readers.
Craft Talks
Want a fun crash course into unique craft topics not covered anywhere else? From how to write historical fiction and other identities with empathy and authenticity to how to write through dark periods (and take care of yourself while doing it), GrubStreet's Craft Talks explore fascinating writing subjects often left out of traditional classes and workshops.
Stories From the Screen (Coming Soon!)
Great writing doesn't just live on the page! In GrubStreet's Stories From the Screen, explore storytelling from a visual medium through deep dives into short films, TV episodes, and more. Each screening will be accompanied by an interactive talk about the art of storytelling from a GrubStreet instructor. Whether you're an aspiring filmmaker or simply a lover of cinema, you’ll gain a deeper understanding of how we tell stories and what we can learn from film. Stay tuned! We’ll have more info to share about this series soon.
Partner & Community Events
On any given night of the week, you can join an event hosted by Mass Poetry, Porter Square Books: Boston Edition, the GrubStreet community, and other local community partners. See what our partners have coming up soon on the Writers' Stage.
