Young Adult Writers Program (YAWP): Unpacking the Poetry Toolkit

Class Description:

So you've been writing poetry, eh? You think you might be a poet? That is, you've been putting words on paper and liking the images and thoughts you are assembling? You might be unaware of some of the tools in poetry toolkit (metaphor, simile, metaphor, hyperbole, allusion, rhyme rhythm, stanzas...synecdoche anyone??). Come and join us as we unpack and clarify some of the tools in the Poet's Toolkit. We will be reviewing many of these terms and creating our own poems using some of these literary devices.

Takeaways: By the end of this class, you will have created at least three poems, or first drafts which you can later work into polished pieces. You'll also find a community of new poets and gain much from sharing in a group of poetry peers.

Who Should Register?

For high school writers age 13 - 18 ONLY. Writing notebooks will be available, but feel free to bring your own.
