In this class for teens of all experience levels, we’ll experiment with writing in new voices as we refine our own. We’ll play with using dialect, slang, and formal diction. We will generate new writing in class based on a variety of prompts, some related to premise or plot, others to structure and technical aspects of writing. You’ll have plenty of opportunities to read their work and receive on-the-spot feedback from the other students and the instructor. Those who want written feedback are welcome to bring in a few pages of longer work. We’ll also read examples of fiction and theory, and play a warm up game to begin. This course is perfect for young writers interested in expanding their toolbox of writing styles, and who enjoy experimenting with language to create tension, intrigue, and excitement in fiction.

Join GrubStreet’s Young Adult Writers Program (YAWP), a FREE creative writing workshop for Boston-area high schoolers. Our students come from a wide variety of high schools in the Boston area and enjoy cool writing exercises, mingling with fellow young writers, snacks, and an optional open mic. After four great years, YAWP has already been recognized by the Boston Globe as Boston's hub for writing teenagers. You must be 13-18 years to register.
